Design Diffusion’s FuoriSalone 2018 focuses on the most innovative mini houses: technological, green and mobile!
Inhabits is the event organized by Design Diffusion at the prestigious venue of the Sforza Castle during Milan Design Week 2018 (17-22 April), where it will be possible to discover the most innovative solutions for the city and the house of the future. The focal point of Inhabits (which will also offer visionary installations, talks and entertainment) will be the ‘house units’, minimum housing units that are sustainable, mobile and energetically self-sufficient. These mini houses meet the needs of the new metropolitan nomads and prefigure a lighter, more minimal living style, that can be adjusted to different environments without giving up comfort and the direct relationship with the urban or natural context.

RUBNER HAUS and IED: smart laminated fir spaceship
The Rubner Haus Spaceship, designed and built by Rubner Haus (www.rubner.com) and Istituto Europeo di Design Turin (www.ied.it), has landed at the Sforza Castle from the possible living universe just for Inhabits. You are allowed to look around it, in the cozy wood-scented interiors of this ‘self-sufficient organism’ able to produce energy, food, oxygen and water using the sun and the photosynthesis. Paolo Scoglio and Cesare Griffa, designers and professors of the students of the postgraduate course Smart Buildings and Sustainable Design have automated the traditional Blockhaus building system, adopted by Rubner Haus group that has already realized more than 25,000 prefabricated buildings with the aforementioned and the Residenz, Casablanca and Holzius systems. The spaceship, reproducible in endless shapes, is a ‘passive house’, resulting from generative parametric design and green building. Featuring a vertical vegetable garden, micro-algae and solar greenhouse.
MA.D.I by Arealegno
M.A.DI. Home by Arealegno: mini ready-to-use nomadic house
The acronym stands for Modulo Abitativo Dispiegabile, (unfoldable modular living unit) the system patented by Arealegno (www.arealegno.it) for anti-seismic wooden buildings for leisure, hospitality, residential, commercial use with which it is possible to create villages for sports events and fairs as well as first aid facilities in case of natural disasters. In a few hours, it makes it possible to have a temporary or permanent house, also energy class A, built according to green building principles. Each M.A.DI. is delivered complete with all its systems, air-conditioning, cladding and PVC windows. When each part is tested, the module is ‘packaged’ and stored in the warehouse, ready for a new destination. In its domestic version, it is warm and comfortable, in line with our times characterized by continuous movement and changes. A zero impact intimate oasis that does not consume land, with a floor area ranging from 27 to 70 sq m.

LA TERRA E L’ALTALENA: a recovery route after the earthquake
The earthquake that took place in 2017 in central Italy created voids that can be filled by the citizens’ resilience and a new sustainable planning, starting from the ‘fragile lands’. This is why the nonprofit association La Terra e l’Altalena was founded by architecture firms Ofis Architects based in Ljubljana (www.ofis-a.si), C28 based in Fabriano (www.28.it), C + C based in Tolentino (www.orastudio.it), within the slow tourism project ‘Il cammino nelle terre mutate‘. At the end of June 2018 (thanks to Federtrek, Movimento Tellurico and Ape), a 200 km long route from Fabriano to L’Aquila, going across 4 regions and 2 national parks, to be covered on foot or by bicycle, will be opened. The purpose of La Terra e l’Altalena is to create a network of public and private institutions, more specifically, to support the planning of the area, also thanks to a contest for small entrepreneurs and crowdfunding. Inhabits 2018 will provide the chance to establish important contacts and the first projects, such as small accommodating units, are expected to be realized in 2019.
aVoid Tiny House
aVOID Tiny House: 9 sq m on wheels, the freedom to live anywhere
The micro mobile house aVoid Tiny House, the tiniest ever realized in Italy, designed by young architect Leonardo di Chiara (www.leonardodichiara.it) from Pesaro, who indeed lives as an ‘itinerant citizen’ in his minimum house. The wide French window by Schuco allows a lot of natural light in as well as a total opening towards the outdoors, while Hafele provided the mechanisms for transformable furnishings. Equipped with a terrace, it can remaincompletely empty or, with a few moves, make appear from the walls all that is needed to cook, host up to 6 people at lunch, study, work, have a shower, relax on the sofa. It has a wooden frame anchored to a 4-wheel steel trailer, and it has been designed to be put next to similar mini houses, like terracedhouses, forming a urban area. Insulated and equipped with solar panels, it orientates itself according to the seasons. All these stratagems make itcomfortable; after all, it has been designed by a member of Berlin-based Tinyhouse University.
Biosphera by Aktivhaus
BIOSPHERA 2.0: 25 sq m itinerant and scientifically tested house
Biosphera 2.0 – la casa dell’Energy Revolution is a project by Aktivhaus . It is a unique, energetically self-sufficient living unit that can rely on the most advanced green building technologies and an extraordinary test – a 24-month road show during which, anywhere it was installed, the physical parametersof the living environment and the physiological and psychophysical parameters of those who dwelt in it were monitored. For example, it ensures interior comfort also at extreme temperatures (from -20°C to +40°C) and it is able to filter the polluted air of the city. The ‘house’ is made of certified wood and most of the furnishings were realized from raw materials by craftsmen from the Aosta Valley according to tradition. The architectural project developed from a workshop in which over 100 architecture and engineering students from all over Italy took part, organized by Politecnico di Torino DAD, Woodlab Polito, the start-up be-eco and Vallée d’Aoste Structure. GENESI: the glamorous and sustainable housing unit resulting from engineering
La Maggiò Engineering & Construction has chosen Inhabits Design City for the official launch of Genesi, to introduce it as a useful tool for professionals. The brand’s experience and innovative production cycle are available for them to give shape to their creativity, freeing them from technical constraints. The modular structure of Genesi is made of steel, and it is flexible and transportable so that it can be rapidly dismantled and reassembled in any environment. It is also easy to reorganize and customize the interiors, and to add/remove modules meeting different needs. Therefore, it brings momentum toindividuality and the freedom of movement sought after by new urban nomads, following the motto ‘live smart and green’. Green Smart Living – Empathy design with nature
GSL (Green Smart Living) presents Empathy, design Marchingenio Creative Company. The concept will be presented with a site specific creation for Inhabits consisting of various modular design units, shady outdoor areas and a garden. It has been designed to emotionally engage the dweller (or the visitor who goes through it) thanks to the contact with the surrounding nature. Among living, study, working, leisure areas, there are other areas where it is possible to regenerate and live in a healthier and more harmonious way. This architecture is based on the principles of the circular economy and green building through dry systems, equipped with smart technologies. The aim is to renovate and integrate the already existing spaces with rapid and versatile building methods. [LB]
