The modernization works of the Ataturk Cultural Center (AKM), the great cultural center of Istanbul, will end in 2019. The renovation project is by the architectural practice TABANLIO STUDYĞLU Architects.

This was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan: the new Ataturk Cultural Center will open in 2019.

The project is signed by Murat Tabanlıoğlu, world-renowned architect, owner of the studio Tabanlıoğlu Architects (among the most significant achievements, the Istanbul Sapphire, the tallest skyscraper in Turkey and the fourth in Europe):

Overlooking the iconic Taksim Square, the first project of the cultural center dates back to the 1960s. Designed by Hayati Tabanlıoğlu, father of Murat, the building immediately became an icon of the city and of the Turkish architecture of the time. Rebuilt in the 1970s following a fire, the center now required modernization works in line with a 21st century metropolis.

The new AKM will house one of the world’s largest lyrical theaters (with 2,500 seats), as well as art galleries, libraries, theaters, cinemas, cafes and restaurants. It will serve as a platform for international art exhibitions and performances, representing an important attraction for tourists and locals alike.

In addition to interventions aimed at making spaces more usable, the center will be significantly implemented at technological level.
