ALESSANDRO SCANDURRA DESIGNS THE EXHIBITION THAT PAYS HOMAGE TO THE FAMOUS ARCHITECT

For the first time at the Palladio Museum in Vicenza, an exhibition attempts to reconstruct all the complicated history of the face of mythical architect Andrea Palladio, the result of a rigorous scientific research about over five centuries of falsified paintings, misunderstandings and mistakes.

The setup of the exhibition, designed by Alessandro Scandurra with Scandurra Studio, restores a detective-story atmosphere. Beside each painting, the visitor finds luminous tables where the “finds” found in the investigation are presented: x-rays of paintings, stratigraphic sections that highlight the succession of pictorial films, ancient photographs, documents. In this way it is possible to verify the proposed hypotheses on the show and find your “own” Palladio.

The contrasting mirror panels show a broken pattern and the angles produce a particular effect of continuous reflection among the palace, portraits and people. Looking for Palladio’s face is a way to understand why Palladio, unlike his colleagues, did not want his image to render his writings: it is only their dissemination, in fact, the true testimony of his thought. A democratic spread of its architecture, reproducible as a mounting kit”, explains Alessandro Scandurra.

Andrea Palladio’s sixteenth-century portrait doesn’t exist: we know from Giorgio Vasari that at least two of them existed, but the traces of both have been lost. For this reason, in the XVIII century, some English publishers came up with a fake portrait, later Italians responded with a balding, bearded Palladio.
