CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE IN SWITZERLAND.NEW MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL CENTERS

Set 26, 2016 designdiffusion

An initiative of the Embassy of Switzerland in Italy and the House of Architecture in Rome

Between October 11 and November 8, the House of Architecture in Rome will host a program of conferences entitled “Contemporary Architecture in Switzerland. New Museums and cultural centers” and the exhibition “Architecture in Switzerland. Dialogue between history and contemporary living”, dedicated to contemporary Swiss Architecture and Museums.

This initiative from the Embassy of Switzerland in Italy and the House of Architecture in Rome is promoted by Comitato Tecnico Scientifico della Casa dell’Architettura, the Chamber of Architects P.P.C. of the City and province of Rome, Roma Capitale and curated by Architect Arianna Callocchia with the specific objective of encouraging dialogue and exchange between the Swiss and Italian realities

This cycle of conferences presents the most important cultural and museum realities completed in Switzerland between 2015 and 2016, and those that are still in the construction stages with inauguration planned for 2019 and 2020. The key figures of the meetings are the designers and the museum directors or curators that present and describe the works on display, not just from the urbanistic and architectonic points of view but with depth information on the cultural, artistic and functional contents. The projects presented are: October 11 LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura by Ivano Gianola; October  25 the extension of the National Museum Zurich and the new building of Kunstmuseum Basel by Christ&Gantenbein; November 8  the Grisons Museum of Fine Arts Chur and mcb-a (Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts), by Barozzi/Veiga, part of the project Plateforme10, in Lausanne. The program of meetings for architects, university lecturers and professionals aims to encourage and develop dialogue and exchange between the Swiss and Italian realities regarding contemporary Museums and cultural centers.

The exhibition “Architecture in Switzerland. Dialogue between history and contemporary living”, curated by Arianna Callocchia, presents a comparative dialogue between history and contemporary living through a selection of projects, chosen from the most recent and most important in Switzerland, already completed or expected to be completed between 2019 and 2020. They all show a powerful and successful ‘contrast’ between ancient and modern, between tradition and innovation. This dialogue is not always easy, but it is beneficial and essential to stimulate creativity where restructuring and requalification projects are concerned. From Lugano to Basle, from Zurich to Lausanne, from Valais to Grisons, the events present a rich and variegated panorama of public and private projects. It aims to promote constructive comparison with a reality that is evolving constantly but differs to the Italian scenario. Nevertheless, it allows the architects to glean or borrow ideas of urban and architectonic recovery that may benefit requalification and the sustainable development of our contemporary cities.
