Shanghai-based design agency X+Living has created the Ripple Hotel, a boutique resort hotel consisting of 12 soho-style villas on the scenic Qiandao Lake in Hangzhou, China. The man-made Qiandao Lake is dotted with thousands of islands and houses an ancient Chinese city submerged under 40 meters of water, attracting countless developers and tourists.
The hotel’s interior features whitewashed walls and otherwise simple internal elements designed to render the natural aesthetic of bamboo-based furniture the focus of the space. Guests are greeted in the lobby by a boat-shaped front desk that seems to float on invisible water. The primitive simplicity and exquisite carving of the interior pieces balance each other effortlessly, with natural textures coexisting with artificial whitewash to create a nature-inspired landscape for guests.
